Monday Morning Muse: Luise Rainer

1996-160-6

This photograph of German-born film actress Luise Rainer, taken in 1945 by American photographer Dorothy Norman in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, joined the Mead’s collection in 1996.

“One of Alfred Stieglitz’s later protégés, Norman demonstrated an eloquent understanding of light and shadow, although she did not consider herself a professional photographer. The small size of her prints conveys their personal nature—also a writer and activist, Norman mainly photographed people and places meaningful to her.” -Maggie Dethloff, Mead post-baccalaureate curatorial fellow, 2011

The following photograph of Alfred Stieglitz by Norman also joined the Mead’s collection in 1996.
