Monday Morning Muse: Jade Lady

2006-01-a-b-cJade Lady by Chinese-born American contemporary artist Hung Liu is a mixed media painting that joined the Mead’s collection in 2006.

“During a 1990 visit to Beiijing, Liu discovered a group of nineteenth-century photographs that continue to inspire her work: images of Chinese prostitutes posed in Westernized studios who return the viewer’s gaze with scandalous directness. To convey the emotional and chronological distance of her subjects, Liu drizzles linseed oil over a thinly applied wash of paint.” -Elizabeth Barker, Mead Director
